CREC Two Rivers Temporary High School - "Historic Revolution"
Hartford, Connecticut
• 40,000 square feet
• Capacity: 880 students in Grades 9 & 10
• Conversion of an existing industrial building into a temporary high school
Out of the shell of an historic landmark and former business office, located on the Colt Firearms Company campus, a modern STEM high school emerged. At the outset of this design challenge to create a new school plan within the existing frame, the dilapidated 1942 Art Moderne Style building was nearly beyond repair. Restored to its original magnificence, the structure maintains its historic character and detailing. Its grand entry vestibule was revived for another 50 years of discovery. Many historic amenities remain side by side with modern building systems, showing little evidence that this was not always the case.
