CPBN Learning Lab - "Nerve Center"
Hartford, Connecticut
• 20,000 square feet
• Serving Grade 12 Students at Hartford's Journalism & Media Academy
• Colorful multimedia broadcasting and learning center
Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network (CPBN) teamed with Hartford Public Schools to establish a “first of its kind” education center. This “hands on” immersion lab serves as a capstone of the City’s Journalism & Media Academy. Learning is enhanced by access to the lab’s TV stations, green screen room, radio broadcast/control rooms, screening rooms, video conference, audio recording-mixing booths and multi-media editing suites. While these spaces are virtually connected by theme, an architectural challenge arose: how to design within the existing nerve center - the fiber optic and copper cabling that runs through the spine of the building. The colorful solution not only connects the programs to the outside world, but also forms an artistic definition to the learning environment itself.
